Care to lend me a hand?

It is my dream to start a homestead after I finish high school and college. I don’t know much about nature, construction, or buying property, though, so I have a lot of questions.

1. Does the state of Michigan still permit people to build log cabins with no electricity or indoor plumbing?
2. Where can I find a very good farming book? I know how to plant things, but I do not know when to plant them, or what plants go best together. I also don’t know much about herbs.
3. What sort of things would I need to drill a well?
4. How much property might I need to build a cabin large enough to house one adult, who may possibly marry and have a child, yet still be old-fashioned? Plus an outhouse, a well, a vegetable and herb garden, a workshop/shed, some fruit trees, and maybe an old junker to get to town.
5. How much money would I need to build all of that?
6. How long would it take to do build all of that?
7. What sort of thing might I study in college to further aid my venture?

What are some effective tips when asking for a pay increase? (Retail)?

I am a college student looking to get a raise at my job at Lowe’s Home Improvements. Any effective tips you’d like to share?

Should my 19 year niece, a college student, be allowed to move into an apartment with boyfriend? Mom says no.

My sister wants her daughter to remain in residence rather than move in with a boyfriend. My sister feels that her daughter will focus better on what should be a priority..her studies. She also feels that her daughter will be cutting herself off at a time in her life when she should be meeting lots of boys. (this is her first boyfriend). My sister is footing the bill for her daughter’s education, and would be paying for half of the apartment (the boyfriend doesnt have a job yet but says he will pay the other half) But, my sister is concerned that if it doesnt work out, then she would also be stuck with paying the whole monthly cost of the apartment.
What my sister wants is for my niece to remain in residence or to share the rent of an apartment with other girls. My niece feels that she would focus better on her studies if she were to live with her boyfriend. She says that she is not interested in meeting others. Advice anyone?
I should mention that I am involved because I was asked by my sister if I would post this question on Yahoo.

How can a person who claims to have had a high IQ in college be so completely ignorant?

I know someone who is 59 and claims to have had a 136 IQ in college. Now, I’ve never seen anyone who is so unaware of life around him. Is it because he doesn’t watch the news or entertainment programs? He only watches the history channel, home improvement channels, food channels, sports (a given) the military channel and on occasion the learning channel. It’s difficult to have a conversation with him without him saying “Oh, I was wondering what you meant” or “I didn’t understand what you were saying.” I have never had a conversation with anyone else where I had to be extremely careful about the words I used because I thought they might not understand me. I’m an American girl and speak perfect english but this person makes me crazy because he won’t watch things that are happening in the world around him. This makes it difficult to carry on conversations with him.
One thought, could it also be that he is a truck driver who spends a lot of time on the road and just doesn’t have a clue?

Is sales right for me?

Hi, I’m a finance major at college right now, with a stellar GPA, high breadth of knowledge (good in every subject), and am currently seeking entry-level work experience. I go to a state school so I don’t feel like I can land some lucrative investment banking internship/job straight out of college. I am unsure of my ultimate career goal, but after I graduate college in two years, I plan to work possibly in banking or wherever I can in finance, and I think eventually I want to do either asset management or start my own business. I live with my parents still (I commute to college), so I would have practically ZERO overhead expenses and could afford to do poorly in sales. Besides making some money, possibly doing a little networking, and building my resume, I was also thinking sales would help me to really master interpersonal skills, which I think are very important for success in business. So does sales sound like a good place for me to be right now? Or did I just sell it to myself?
