1) Be very well-dressed, and look your best. People don’t like to admit this, but good-looking people tend to be favored. If you’re not naturally good-looking, at least dress well and be well-groomed.

2) Be the tallest. You can’t affect this too much, so the best you can do is wear dress shoes with heels.

3) Be polite and greet everyone with a firm handshake. Introduce yourself and say your name AS you shake their hand to emphasize it, so they’ll remember you.

3a) Be especially polite and gracious to any women you meet. It’s a modern age, but women still react very favorably to men who act graciously towards them. They will likely influence the other male decision-makers in your favor.

4) Maintain steady eye contact. Hold peoples’ gazes. Do this both with the people you meet on the job as well as the other candidates – it will intimidate them, while conveying to the people on the job a firm impression that you are not a person to be taken lightly. It will give you “presence.”

5) Don’t swear or do anything untoward or uncouth (this goes without saying).

6) If one of the other candidates tries to “do something” (i.e. takes the initiative, trying to stand out), don’t feel threatened. Instead, HELP them, and when you do, use it as an opportunity to forge a bond with them, like a “we’re all in this together” type of bond. The ability to form bonds is important in managers, and it will reflect favorably on you.

If you see a problem, identify it and a possible solution.
Be proactive, don’t take just observe quietly.
