What’s your opinion of log homes?

Do you like them? Would you buy one? Is it more for a cottage that you would like it?

I'm thinking of building one, and almost everyone I know says that they love them, but my dad think it will be hard to re-sell because not everyone likes them. I just want to know who's right!

  1. Well I have lived in three log homes, so I think I can answer your question. The first was a ground level home and plastered on the inside – very comfortable, warm and spacious. I would recommend that one.
The second was on stilts for the view – it wasn't braced properly, and there were acoustic problems. When the dog scratched himself the house would shake (I kid you not). Every sound was heard throughout the house and it was the most uncomfortable home I have ever lived in as a result.
Then we moved to a huge, spacious and very well built log home – this one is properly braced, has concrete standards and garages and a flat underneath. Very comfortable indeed.
Acoustically, the only problem we have is that the people whom we sub-let to are conscious of music playing in the bedroom above them and at times, we have to turn it down. This could be rectified with a layer of soundproofing under the flooring (their ceiling).
I would say – go for it. No walls to paint or wash (this one is not plastered inside but timber clad) and has a lovely ambiance and view.
The only drawback is that one must always be conscious of the risk of fire (candles left alight, etc). But then one has to be cautious in any house I guess.
The re-sale value on this house is very high.

They look nice but I always think of doing renovations in the future. Ones I have seen have the electrical outlets set into the logs. This prevents moving them. Any changes to the interior are harder than a stick house. Country singer Mel Tillis had one that burned down and said he would never have another one as it went up really fast.

I would love to live in one. But only if it was in the woods or out in the country. A log house in town just feels strange. But out in the country it feels right and cozy and seems like it could withstand anything.
