I seen a movie where people were renting a place, and then the real owner came home. When renting from a private person is there anything you can do to make sure it is legit?

You can look on the county assessor's website for your county to see who owns the property you are looking into renting. If it is owned by a rental/management company, I imagine you could call them to confirm that the person you spoke with is a leasing agent with the company (i.e. the apartment manager).
